Sudden Instagram API changes. What impact for your wall?

by Alexis Serneels

On April 4th 2018, Instagram deployed an unscheduled change to their API, breaking nearly every app that connects to Instagram. This follows another unannounced change that reduced the number of API calls developpers can make to their servers per hour, per client.

This sudden change was announced and scheduled for december 2018 which left us time to adapt our code. Unfortunately they didn't respect this schedule and announced "To continuously improve Instagram users' privacy and security, we are accelerating the deprecation of Instagram API Platform, making the following changes effective immediately. We understand that this may affect your business or services, and we appreciate your support in keeping our platform secure. "

What impact for your wall?

We were able to bring results for your tracked hashtag on Instagram back within a few hours. That's a good news!

Although there is a catch: Instagram announced: "Some information (...) returned through hashtag (...) search will be removed - Name, Bio, Comments, Commenters, Follower Count, Following Count, Post Count, and Profile Picture".

This means that we still get pictures containing your hashtag but do not have the real name and Profile picture of its author. We then display the username as the name and a placeholder profile picture for the time being.
We'll be updating our Display to hide those information which became unrelevant.

Tldr;

We are trully sad and sorry about thoses changes and the way Instagram handled the situation so poorly. We do our best to continue offering you the best experience for your events and conferences.

Thank you for your trust and comprehension.
